Schoolboy, 16, on life support machine after being struck by cricket
ball in playground during lunch hourBy Emma Reynolds

A 16-year-old is fighting for his life in hospital after a cricket
ball was thrown at him in the school playground. The teenager, who has
been named locally as Kyle Rees, was struck on the temple by the ball
and knocked unconscious. Kyle collapsed in the playground of
Portchester Boys School in Bournemouth, Dorset, as pupils and teachers
rushed to his side. Police have launched an investigation into the
‘unexplained’ incident.

They have cordoned off the school while they carry out investigations
and speak to witnesses to establish if there are any suspicious
circumstances. It is thought blond-haired Kyle was struck by the ball,
which may have been a hard hockey ball, towards the end of the lunch
hour. But a spokesman for Dorset police said they were only alerted to
the incident five hours after Kyle was hit. He said today: 'We were
called at 7.30pm last night to an incident that occurred earlier in
the day at Portchester School involving a 16-year-old boy who
sustained a serious head injury.

'A police cordon is in place at the school while officers investigate
the circumstances of the incident which we are treating as
unexplained.' There was confusion today over Kyle’s condition as
‘sick’ rumours began circulating in internet message boards that he
had died. A tribute site in his name was set up on Facebook and as a
result pupils and parents began leaving flowers in his memory at the
all-boys school.

One pupil posted on Twitter: 'He died today..his name is Kyle Rees, &
he was in year 11, he died after a coma when his m8 threw a cricket
ball to his head.' The police spokesman said: 'We are aware that
floral tributes and Facebook messages have been left in memory of the
boy but he is not dead, although his injuries are incredibly severe.'
One woman posted on the Facebook site: 'Whoever made this page is
sick.' Portchester School is a specialist sports college that has 766
pupils aged between 11 and 16. It shares its grounds with neighbouring
Avonbourne, an all-girls school. Kyle lives with mother Tanya Cooper,
two older brothers and sister in a three-bed semi detached house in
the Charminster area of Bournemouth.

She received a call from Kyle’s school after the incident yesterday
and was driven to Bournemouth Hospital where she met the ambulance
carrying Kyle. He was then transferred to Southampton Hospital where
he was placed on a life-support machine. Miss Cooper’s ex-partner
Martin Beale was with her for 11 years until they split up last year
and was ‘like a dad’ to Kyle. Mr Beale’s mother Christine Shave, 54,
from Bournemouth, today told of the family’s devastation. She said:
'My son phoned me last night and told me the terrible news. He was in
floods of tears. He was devastated; he is like a dad to Kyle.

'I think he had been called by Kyle’s mother last night and she told
him the news.
'As far as I know it was an accident at school. Somebody through a
cricket ball which hit Kyle on the head and he got a haemorrhage.
'I can’t imagine it being anything other than a tragic accident.'

Kyle is a keen cook and works at the same language school as his
mother in the school summer holidays. He has recently been accepted
for an engineering college course. Neighbour Emma Thorn, 21, said: 'He
is a bright, bubbly boy who gets on with everyone.'
